Leading Edge Geomatics is a New Brunswick company providing aerial survey and geomatics services across North America. With experienced staff and advanced equipment, Leading Edge works with each client to achieve the optimum solution for each project.

With a fleet of four aircraft and seven digital sensors, Leading Edge offers customized solutions to clients across a number of industries including energy, forestry, and mining. The principals of Leading Edge have a combined 40 years of practice in the geomatics industry, and have worked on projects throughout North America, and internationally in Afghanistan, conducting national level survey projects. To date, LEG has flown over 150,000 km² of LiDAR, and more than 100,000 km² of aerial photography.

Bruce Hogan

Bruce Hogan is Chief Executive Officer and Director of Sales at Leading Edge Geomatics. Bruce worked as a Geomatics Technician with the Department of National Defence before becoming Geomatics Manager of the Atlantic region in 2002. In 2006, Bruce began his sales career working for Applanix Corporation as the account manager of Government and Military.

Having delivered keynote addresses and presentations to various military organizations across Canada and internationally in the United States, Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Romania, and Australia, Bruce has presented to organizations including the FBI and Homeland Security. Bruce brings a strong geomatics background and a keen interest in worldwide sales. As CEO and Director of Sales at Leading Edge, Bruce oversees all marketing, sales, and account management efforts, ensuring clients are satisfied with their LEG products and services.

Bill Kidman

Bill Kidman — President and CTO

Bill Kidman is the President, Chief Technical Officer, and co-founder of Leading Edge Geomatics (LEG). Under Bill’s direction, Leading Edge has seen tremendous growth since establishment in 2008. Exceedingly passionate about geomatics and all things related, Bill has years of mapping and technical experience.

After graduating from the Canadian Forces School of Military Mapping in 2003, Bill began his career in mapping with the Department of National Defence. Upon retirement in 2008, Bill took on the position of President and Chief Technical Officer of Leading Edge Geomatics.

Bill’s extensive mapping background includes missions around the world including Kandahar, Afghanistan, with the US Naval Research Laboratory Marine Geophysics Branch, to assist in a multi-sensor, high-altitude, geophysical survey of Afghanistan.

Bill enjoys being involved in all research and development as well as collaborating with industry professionals to discover new applications for Leading Edge Geomatics’ products and services in various industries.

Mike Oliver

Mike Oliver is the Vice President of Corporate Development at Leading Edge Geomatics.  Mike has worked more than 20 years within the energy, engineering and military/aerospace industries. An electrical engineer, Mike has served on the Board of Directors of the Information Technology Association of Nova Scotia (ITANS) and Enterprise Fredericton, and continues to instruct part-time for the University of New Brunswick’s Technology Management & Entrepreneurship Program.

As VP of Corporate Development at LEG, Mike’ focus is strengthening  LEG’s corporate strategy by overseeing activities in support of marketing, training, and resource optimization.

Will Lowry

Will Lowry is a co-founder of Leading Edge Geomatics. A graduate of the Canadian Forces School of Military Mapping, Will served his career on the operational side of the Mapping and Charting Establishment. After his 2008 retirement from the Canadian Forces, Will became the Director of Operations and IT Management at Leading Edge.

During his service, Will spent two years as the Commander of a Geomatics Support Team, including an operational tour as the Commander of the All Source Intelligence Center Geomatics Support Team in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Yong Kwon

Yong Kwon has been involved in advising technology, media, telecom and other growth companies on capital raising and strategic initiatives since 2001. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an MBA from the University of Toronto.

Prior to joining Novacap in 2014, Mr. Kwon spent 13 years in investment banking with RBC Capital Markets and Barclays in Toronto, where he was responsible for the origination and execution of M&A advisory, equity and debt financing transactions, primarily in technology and other growth sectors.

Mr. Kwon is the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Leading Edge Geomatics and Firmex.

Francois Laflamme

François Laflamme has been involved in the technology sector as an entrepreneur, technology innovator, and private equity investor. He holds an Electrical Engineering Degree from École Polytechnique of Montreal, and an MBA in Finance from HEC Montreal. Mr. Laflamme also completed the Entrepreneurship Development Program at MIT.

Mr. Laflamme has over 25 years of experience in managing technology companies. He was President and CEO of LiquidxStream Systems, a telecom equipment company in the Novacap portfolio. He was also a Partner at IUGO Ventures, a venture-capital fund specialized in the TMT industry, where he led several investments in technology companies based in Canada and the US. In addition, he was Vice-President of IP Telephony at Videotron, where he pioneered the introduction of the local telephony service using next generation VoIP infrastructure. Mr. Laflamme joined Novacap in 2012.

Mr. Laflamme is  a  Board member of  Leading Edge Geomatics, Dialogic, and Réseau Capital.  He is Chairman of the Board of Intelerad Medical Systems.

Kristian Valenta

Kristian Valenta is an Associate at Novacap. Prior to joining the firm in 2014, Mr. Valenta was a Senior Analyst at KPMG Corporate Finance in Montreal where he was involved on a number of mergers & acquisitions and corporate finance advisory transactions in various industries including TMT, healthcare, and education. Prior to that, Mr. Valenta worked as an Analyst for TMX/CDS. Mr. Valenta holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Honors Finance from Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business.

Mr. Valenta is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Leading Edge Geomatics, Syntax Systems and Nitrex Metal Inc., and serves as an observer on the Board of Directors of Octasic and Dialogic, and has previously served on the Board of Directors of Chemical Computing Group and Firmex.

Quality Assurance/Quality Control Analyst

Leading Edge Geomatics (LEG) is currently seeking an experienced Quality Assurance/Quality Control Analyst to join our growing team. The QA/QC Analyst is a vital point of contact for clients and members of the LEG team. By overseeing all remote sensing projects’ QA/QC, and liaising on a daily basis with the LEG team and clients, the QA/QC Analyst ensures delivery of complete and accurate aerial survey data, using company workflow processes to ensure the highest levels of accuracy, data quality, and client satisfaction. Reporting to the Manager of Positioning and working closely with all department managers, this is a full-time, permanent position based at company headquarters in Lincoln, New Brunswick.

Responsibilities:

The Quality Assurance/Quality Control Analyst has strong organizational skills with an ability to manage a diverse team and competing client demands. They are involved in all stages of project management including planning, monitoring and reporting, resource and timeline management, risk assessment and mitigation, and quality assurance. The QA/QC Analyst is also expected to assist in creation and completion of data processing on a regular basis. The QA/QC Analyst is thoroughly familiar with all LEG processes, contracts and timelines, enabling them to coordinate and provide support to all departments on a regular basis. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Overseeing and performing QC on project deliverables to ensure they are consistent with contract requirements and delivery dates, completing or advising on necessary alterations
• Coordinating and organizing various departments and resources to ensure contract deliverables and timelines will be achieved
• Consult on procedures for standard product deliverables, thus improving quality, and providing clarity in project capabilities and product options
• Maintain communications with all departments in order to stay up to date on project status
• Assist with completion of basic LiDAR and Photo processing checks and tasks
• Complete various Project Quality Reports as required
• Assess LiDAR dataset accuracies, coverage and densities
• Examine data integrity
• Assist in crafting remediating action to improve data creation workflow
• Assist with researching and testing new methodologies to increase efficiencies, and help develop work arounds for tasks requiring alternative software

Essential Qualifications:

Must have successfully completed a post-secondary training program in remote sensing and/or GIS (including mapping, projections and datum) from a recognized post-secondary institution, and have at least three years’ experience in remote sensing or GIS industry. Strong computer skills are also required. Experience with trajectory processing is considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Sensor Operator

The overall goal of this position is to significantly contribute to the ongoing success of
LEG by conducting efficient aerial surveys that provide highly accurate and high-quality data to meet all specifications designated by the client. Reporting to LEG’s Operations Department, this is a part-time leading full-time position. During peak season this position requires significant overtime as well as overnight travel for up to five consecutive weeks.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Operating remote sensing equipment from aircraft:
• Effectively monitoring sensor parameters through mission software and ensuring project specifications are met
• Ensuring sensors are prepared and working before each mission
• Familiarization with sensors and associated hardware in order to better understand and efficiently troubleshoot errors
• Familiarization with the project areas to be surveyed
• Maintaining comprehensive, detailed and accurate field notes
• Accurately inputting data into databases
• Ensuring data and results of the highest accuracy, integrity and quality are consistently delivered to clients

Essential Qualifications:

• Successful completion of Grade 12
• Must be in good physical condition:
• Ability to lift and move gear weighing up to 40 pounds
• Ability to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, heat, cold, noise and vibration, extreme cold, heat, and all types of weather conditions
• Ability to sit for prolonged periods in confined spaces

Land Survey Technician

We are currently seeking a Survey Technician to join our team. Reporting to LEG’s Operations Manager, this is a part-time leading full-time position.

The overall goal of this position is to significantly contribute to the ongoing success of LEG by conducting efficient ground surveys that provide highly accurate and precise coordinates, and processing the data to meet all specifications designated by the client. During peak season, this position requires significant overtime as well as overnight travel for up to four consecutive weeks.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Effectively planning ground control surveys to meet project requirements within the required timelines

• Thoroughly familiarizing yourself with the project areas to be surveyed, assisting in identifying appropriate control points prior to departure

• Correctly setting up, connecting, configuring and leveling the survey equipment, taking sufficient numbers of measurements to confirm the measurements are correct

• Carefully locating all ground control points in the field

• Closely observing data on provincial control monuments simultaneously with the control points identified during the planning stage

• Quickly and effectively troubleshooting equipment or software problems

• Taking comprehensive, detailed and accurate field notes about all procedures used

• Maintenance of survey equipment and basic vehicle maintenance as required
