Tarponds_SmAerial Photography and LiDAR offer users an efficient and accurate way to gather data on many different aspects of the environment. Our affordable and efficient surveys make it possible for users to routinely gather data on areas or ecosystems of interest, offering constant up to date information. By acquiring aerial data, users can obtain a variety of different deliverables, allowing them to easily monitor the state of any area or changes in characteristics, helping to continuously work towards sustainability.

 

Wet Areas Mapping

Wet Areas Mapping has many applications and uses. By revealing characteristics of the landscape and water, intelligent maps contribute to efforts in sustainable resource management, environmental management, tourism, parks and recreation, transportation, agriculture and rural development, and municipal affairs. Leading Edge works with clients to identify the relevant characteristics for each project through efficient aerial LiDAR surveys and the production of customized deliverables to suit the user’s needs.

Through the generation of a LiDAR-derived DEM, users can identify and locate:

• Watercourses
• Flow channels and related blockages
• Flood plains
• Seasonally varying depth to water ratios
• Sensitive aquatic habitats
• Areas sensitive to disturbances
• Watershed boundaries

Tailing Ponds

The constant monitoring of tailings ponds is imperative to mitigate risk of contamination and maintain the natural state of surrounding environments. Leading Edge has extensive experience in routine monitoring of tailings ponds, helping users to ensure break walls and safeguards are in place to protect our environment.

The remnants of tailing ponds associated with large mining operations are visible through high resolution aerial photography as well as applicable LiDAR. These tailings ponds house runoff from mining operations and often contain harmful chemicals and compounds. The runoff from these tailings ponds is an extreme hazard to the Earth’s soil and responsible and accurate monitoring of the ponds is imperative.

Wildlife & Habitat

Forestry_WildLifeLiDAR technology presents an innovative opportunity to improve the process for identifying and assessing wildlife habitat. More precise than traditional aerial survey used to monitor wildlife habitats, LiDAR is capable of accurately identifying forest structure and variability linked to various forms of wildlife. With LiDAR, Identification of wildlife habitat is no longer restricted to using estimates related to timber volumes. Using LiDAR data, habitat identification can now be expanded to consider species and habitat variables that are characteristic of specific wildlife habitats, allowing for more accurate habitat and population assessments, and consequently improved habitat and population planning.

• LiDAR-derived data provides a new means to measure forest structure of fish habitats around lakes, rivers and streams, and offers a cost effective and accurate auditing and monitoring solution.
• LiDAR paired with imagery can also be used to detect early onset of stress in trees resulting from forest pests.
• LiDAR has the potential to effectively contribute to the proper management and conservation of wildlife habitats.

Archaeology

Aerial LiDAR surveys can contribute to archaeological exploration and digging as they can reveal more than traditional aerial photographs and ground surveys.

In 2011, Leading Edge Geomatics completed an unrelated project along a highway outside of Fredericton, NB. Upon reviewing the LiDAR data, a historical POW camp from World War II and related building footprints were discovered. The building footprints outlined guard and bunk houses, the outlying ditches and roads, as well as guard tower placements along the visible perimeter fencing. These discoveries were not visible through aerial photographs or ground surveying.

Coastal Monitoring

Aerial surveys can offer an accurate interpretation of the current hydrological scheme, and also allow users to observe and monitor coastal changes over time.

Potential water level rise studies can be supported by means of highly accurate 3D vector(s), and topologically corrected contours are individually inspected LEG’s coastal mapping products surpass the industry standards, and illustrate hydrological and terrain states.
